Mundane Magical Items Pt. 1D&D 3e (3.0/3.5) Rulesby Arthur from NarielNot every magic item on Ansalon is intended for warfare or as adventuring gear. Sure, enchanted swords and staffs that hurl fireballs against your enemies form the vast majority of the group. But every object that you can see, it doesn't matter how common and mundane it may be, could bring a powerful enchantment. This kind of magic items is not very common outside the walls of the Towers of High Sorcery or the residence of some wizard, but nonetheless they exist. I know for sure that lady Jenna used to sell some of them, years ago, when she still owned her magic shop in Palanthas. Often they are simply considered curiosities or luxury goods for the nobles, and very few ever consider the hard work involved in their creation, that is not different from that of any other magic item, and even less are those who, being the possessors of one of them, are grateful to the wizards for their service in lightening the toils of the races of Ansalon! - Dalamar Argent, the Dark APRON OF COOKINGSpending most of their time studying from ancient and dusty books or searching new spells, lots of wizards never learned how to cook, not even the simplest meal. This seldom appears as a problem, but not every wizard can afford to pay someone else or is able to summon and control an extraplanar being to do such jobs. And so this apron was created, to help those that disliked eating only raw foods. Its first and most important power is that it grants a +3 competence bonus on all the Profession (cook) checks of the wearer, and allows him to use this bonus even if he does not have any rank in this ability. Moreover, it catches spills and stains before they touch the wearer or the wearer's clothes and, as a move action, can be ordered to clean itself and to appear like it was newly crafted. This quality makes it very useful also for an assassin that does not want to be discovered by the bloodstains on himself. ARMCHAIR OF INSOMNIAThis kind of armchair is usually very comfortable, but its enchantment prevents anyone sitting on it to fall asleep from natural causes, and grants a +1 bonus against sleep spells and effects. But it does not prevent or cure tiredness, nor can it substitute a good night of sleep. Simply, its user is unable to get to sleep The first known Armchair of Insomnia was created by an old wizard of the white robes that didn't want his researches to be interrupted from sudden sleep, and Raistlin Majere himself is known to have possessed one of them to keep on studying new spells whole nights and days. BEDROLL OF DRYNESSThis bedroll is enchanted so that its inside is always dry and clean, even if used under rain or snow. Anyone wrapped up in it will in the same way remain dry, unless a liquid is poured directly into the bedroll, or it comes to lie in more than 1' of water. BOTTLE OF PLEASANT ODORSWhen this magical bottle is uncorked, it has two effects. First, it removes all the smells in a 30 ft. radius. Then, that exact same area is filled with a pleasant odour. Various kinds of these bottles are known to exist, each one giving off a different fragrance (rose, lemon, pine, white musk, lily of the valley, etc). BOTTLE OF STABLE TEMPERATUREThis glass bottle or decanter has a capacity of 0,4 gallons, and works much like a Dish of Everwarm Food (below). If a liquid is placed inside it, the liquid's current temperature will never change, even if exposed to extreme conditions like a red dragon's fire breath or a silver dragon ice breath (though the bottle is not invulnerable to these attacks). CALCULATING ABACUSThis device appears to be absolutely identical to an absolutely common abacus, but when its powers are activated one does not need to move the balls on its wires to make the most common calculations. Whenever a mathematical formula involving adding, subtracting, multiplying and/or dividing numbers is pronounced near the Calculating Abacus, the coloured balls start to move to match the exact result, that is also spoken in the Common language by a disembodied voice. CLOTH OF CLEANLINESSThis cloth in enchanted so that it never needs to be washed. Simply, if during the night it is kept in a dark place, dirt and stains will disappear. CLOTH OF POLISHINGWhen this small cloth (1 square ft.) is rubbed against a metal object to polish, dirt, rust and tarnish will disappear, making the object shine as if it was new. DECANTER OF RIGHT TEMPERATUREThis magical item can, by a simple act of will, alter the temperature of any liquid it holds, and keep it constant regardless of the surrounding circumstances. Like the Bottle of Stable Temperature, these items are often sought by fine wine connoisseurs. DISH OF EVERWARM FOODThese finely adorned pieces of pottery can be fashioned in any shape. When nonliving material is placed in one of them, that object (usually something to eat) will keep exactly the same temperature until removed. This means, for example, that ice won't melt, even if brought in a volcanic cave, and supper will never freeze, even in Icereach. The dishes are not indestructible, though. EVERBURNING CANDLEThis candle must be lit normally, but its wax never consumes and, moreover, its flame does not need oxygen and can keep on burning in the midst of a storm or even underwater. The only way to shut off the flame is to hold the candle in hand while speaking the correct command word, usually inscribed on it. PARADISIAC BLANKETThe dweomer woven into this blanket will keep a comfortable temperature for anyone sleeping under it. Its power, however, is limited, and cannot maintain a temperature more than 30° F higher or lower from that of the ambient. PERFECTLY FITTING DRESSThis magical kind of dress will always be of the exact size of anyone who tries to wear it. SCRATCHING HANDA pendant fashioned in the way of a small hand. At will, its cord can extend to allow the hand to move freely on the user's body and scratch it, to relieve an itch. SELF-CLEANING CARPETThis appears to be an ordinary carpet, but it can be ordered to animate, rise up a shake itself free of dust and dirt. If ordered, it can go outside on its own to shake, if it is possible (for example, if there's no closed door on its way). Designing Note: some of these items are fan transpositions of 2nd edition magic items to the rules of the 3.5 edition of Dungeons and Dragons. The original versions can be found in the ENCYCLOPEDIA MAGICATM. * The Remove Scent spell is taken from the SPELL COMPENDIUM.
