Dragon Shamans in Ansalon

Wizards of the Coast introduced the dragon shaman class in Player's Handbook II. With the draconic flavor of the class, it is a natural fit for the Dragonlance setting.

Treat the dragon shaman's breath weapon and draconic auras as ambient magic. Dragon shamans wield the power inherent in the natural world as the true dragons do. This self-reliance is incompatible with the total trust in the gods needed to wield divinely granted spells. Draconians and dragonspawn may freely combine this class with any other class, as they are wielding magic inherent in their own being. Dragon shamans following chromatic totems are much more common than those following metallic totems, and therefore most dragon shamans in Ansalon are evil.

The dragon shaman class is most frequently pursued by those who have some affinity or connection to dragons, whether to an individual dragon or a historical association between an organization and dragonkind.

Among humans, some Knights of the Sword and Knights of the Skull have followed the path of the dragon shaman, choosing silver or blue dragons respectively as their totems.

Servants of the Dragon Overlords sometimes take levels in this class in devotion to their draconic master. These servants would invariably choose a totem that matched the powers of their lord. While most of the Overlords are dead, some of these servants have survived the demise of their masters. These servants are commonly humans, ogres, thanoi, goblins, or bakali lizard men.

Few dragonspawn were trained in this class, as they can use many of its abilities naturally. Those few that have been trained in this class usually pick a totem different from the dragon that spawned them.

Base draconians sometimes pursue this class. Those that do are generally the most introspective among their kind, and seek to explore their draconic heritage. Most draconian dragon shamans pick a totem that matches their own heritage (Aurak = gold, Kapak = copper, etc). Many of these shamans are neutral, as few draconians can completely overcome the corruption of their original creation. Draconians may treat dragon shaman as a favored class if the totem matches their heritage.

There are no documented dragon shamans among the noble draconians. Noble draconians are haunted by nightmares of their denied heritage and most do not wish to explore it any further.

There are few dragon shamans among the elves, gnomes, dwarves, minotaur, or kender.
