Abyssal Lance

Article written by Kranar Drogin

The Abyssal Lance, sometimes called a Darklance, was created by Ariakan Ariakas during the Chaos War. Ariakan knew there would be a time when the Knights of Solamnia and the Knights of Takhisis would be at odds with each other again. So, Ariakan had his greatest clerics and wizards come together and they made a few of these weapons of power. Following the war, the Dark Knights were no longer able to craft these weapons of power. The lances are also few to be found, and are scattered throughout all of Ansalon.

As the same with the Dragonlance, there are two types of Abyssal Lances.

The Lesser Abyssal Lance is crafted from Dragonmetal, through a ritual given to Ariakan by the Dark Queen, and the blood of a Metallic Dragon are all needed to infuse the metal with the essence of darkness. The lance was around ten feet in length, with a black shaft and a rust red barbed head, and a cowl that looks like a snarling dragon spitting flames. It has the Dragonbane ability along with being able to absorb light.

The Greater Abyssal Lance is crafted from dragonmetal, through a ritual given to Ariakan by the Dark Queen, and the blood of all five Metallic Dragons are all needed to infuse the metal with the essence of darkness. Any people of good alignment who try to use this type of Abyssal Lance will be punished. The lance is more than fifteen feet in length, a black shaft, rust red colored barbed head, and a large black shield at the end of the lance. On this shield are the five Chromatic Dragon heads curling up to face outward. Some elements might be added to these lances, creating stronger lances such as a Flaming Greater Abyssal Lance.

One thing to note with both types of lances is that if the head of the lance stays imbedded into the dragon it is attempting to kill, it will slowly work its way towards the dragon's heart, eventually killing it. This can even happen with a small sliver of the metal. The one known to have been used was used to kill Iyesta and the blue Dragonlord Stenndunuus and attempted to kill Crucible with it. A dragon named Sirenfal actually had the slivers in her body; eventually they worked their way down to her heart and killed her.
